Hectic Summer? There’s Still Time to Enjoy Life in the SLO Lane with Your Family
Unplug and Reconnect with Pure Play in San Luis Obispo (SLO) County

SAN LUIS OBISPO (August 1, 2013) – Feel like the summer is halfway over and you haven’t even begun to unwind or reconnect with your family? Want to slow down and live a little? Skip the long lines at the usual-suspect theme parks and head over to San Luis Obispo County (SLO County), a place where going online means ziplining over vineyards, and tweeting means listening to birds sing as you hike on spectacular coastal trails.

SLO County is a rare place to experience authentic California, where your family can unplug and get inspired by natural pleasures, from scenic mountain and beach parks to agritourism experiences where you can pet goats and make cheese from their milk. Rather than riding a rollercoaster in a hot concrete canyon — here “thrilling rides” mean riding an ATV across the windswept beach riding the waves on a surfboard, or riding the trails to release your inner cowboy.

Check out the SLO Lane hotel and activity packages for families below. For more ideas check out Visit San Luis Obispo County’s exciting new website — featuring everything from regional overviews and events to activities and trip ideas.

Hiking and Biking in San Luis Obispo County: The region offers many parks with wonderful trails, such as the Bob Jones Trail — a "City to the Sea" bike trail, which winds through the forested valley alongside San Luis Obispo Creek towards Avila Beach. Estero Bluffs slopes from Highway One to the Pacific Ocean in Cayucos, while El Moro Elfin Forest offers a four-mile boardwalk loop through a beautiful and sensitive wildlife habitat in Los Osos. Montaña de Oro State Park offers gorgeous coastal trails and tidal pools with chances to discover crabs, starfish, shells and giant, fluorescent lime green sea anemones, turban snails, rock crabs and sea stars.

Produced by the Central Coast Cancer Challenge, the event features a 5K or 10K walk/run and a fastest mile challenge through the streets of charming San Luis Obispo, beginning and ending at the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Organizers will reward runners for their efforts—which benefit local cancer survivor fitness programs—with a gourmet pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. Athletes looking for an extra challenge can enter the race’s “Fastest Mile Challenge”—the first of its kind to take place in San Luis Obispo County.

San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum: This hands-on children's museum lets children experience the local history through interactive exhibits.

There are many family friendly wineries in the region, which offer other activities such as bocce ball (i.e. Eberle Winery and Robert Hall Winery), picnics (Castoro Cellars) and concerts (i.e. Vina Robles). Some even offer kid friendly tastings, such as Pithy Little Wine Company where kids 10 and over can enjoy a flight of old-fashioned soda, or Castoro Cellars where children can do juice tasting. LeVigne and Pomar Junction have fun old-fashioned rail cars for kids to explore, while Clautiere Winery offers a virtual fun house with wigs and mirror room.
