Where is Highway 1 closed and for how long?

There are multiple incidents along Highway 1 affecting travel between San Luis Obispo County (SLO CAL) and Big Sur/Monterey.

  • The Mud Creek Slide closure is also in Monterey County, about 4.6 miles north of Ragged Point. Caltrans has not yet released an expected time to reopen this section of Highway 1.

Can we still drive Highway 1?

Yes! Highway 1 is completely open in SLO CAL. In fact, over 85 miles (136km) of Highway 1 in SLO CAL including all destinations, attractions, and businesses are open and accessible: from the northwest corner, just north of Ragged Point to the southern county border with Santa Barbara County (and beyond).

How do we get around the closures?

An easy detour

  • in Santa Barbara County can still utilize northbound Highway 1. For those continuing north, eastbound CA Highway 46 south of Cambria connects to US Highway 101 North near Paso Robles.

How much extra time will it take?

That depends on where you are coming from and where you are going, but easy detours along major freeways mean faster speeds and more amenities. In some cases, travel is faster or the same as driving the curvy Highway 1.

  • Travelers from the north taking Highway 101 as an alternate route from Monterey, will save approximately 25 minutes of travel time to reach SLO CAL.
  • Travel time to Hearst Castle from Monterey via the Highway 101/46 route is approximately the same drive time as the Highway 1 route, depending on traffic.
