Hiking & Trails in SLO CAL

Immerse yourself in nature and take in the stunning scenery on one of SLO CAL’s hundreds of hiking trails. Hitting the trails is a favorite activity in SLO CAL and with good reason—hiking is simply one of the best ways to experience the area’s breathtaking natural beauty. Lace up your hiking boots, pack some water and snacks, and pick a trail to explore.

SLO CAL is famous for its Nine Sisters, a string of picturesque volcanic peaks, or morros, stretching from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. Five of the sisters boast hiking trails. Reach the summit of each and you will be treated to views of SLO CAL below and nearby peaks.

When it comes to panoramic coastal landscapes, there’s no shortage of trail options. From sandy beaches to rugged rocky cliffs, SLO CAL’s hiking trails provide amazing ocean vistas. Check out Montaña de Oro State Park, which contains various trails. A quick turn off Highway One will lead you to Estero Bluffs, offering secluded beaches and wildlife viewing. The Bluff Trail in Montaña de Oro is an easy hike that highlights the exquisite rocky shoreline while giving you access to fascinating tide pools. The more challenging Hazard Peak offers 360-degree vistas, giving you unobstructed views of the coastline, the iconic Morro Rock and rolling hills.

Have kids in tow? The popular Bob Jones Trail is a paved, flat trail that feels more like a walk than a true hike and is a great excursion with the little ones. The trail takes you along the San Luis Obispo Creek, with plenty of native vegetation and small wildlife to watch along the way. The big payoff comes at the end—the trail finishes right at Avila Beach.

Consider a guided hike with San Luis Obispo County Parks or nonprofit ECOSLO to learn insider details as you hike.
